Erin Townsend

Powiernik

Erin is a third-year undergraduate studying music at Somerville College, Oxford University, where she holds both academic and instrumental scholarships. She comes from a state-schooled background in Brighton and learnt music through her local music education hub, Create Music, where she is now a Board Member. At university, she is principally interested in musicology and community music, and is currently writing her dissertation on issues of social class in the classical music industry. She also participates in regular access and outreach work, hoping to demystify Oxford to applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, encourage more of these students to pursue studying music in higher education, and bring the therapeutic power of music to wider audiences. Alongside friends, Erin co-leads the Alternative Canon Project, an Oxford-based initiative seeking to diversify the programming of concert music to include works by underperformed composers, such as those who are nonwhite, female or queer.
